Just think about how different it is when you first come to college. There are all these new and different things you have to learn to deal with: new school, surroundings, people, and a new living situation. Imagine having to deal with that and coming from a different state.
Being an out-of-state student definitely has its ups and downs. Here are some tips…

  • Freedom to do what you want when you want it, without family near to say otherwise.
  • Friends in different States
  • A different place to go for breaks and vacations with your friends from school
  • You get to learn a new area and get to know a new community
  • Homesickness
  • Short holiday/weekend breaks and you can’t go home
  • Friends and family from home are far away
  • Lack of immediate support (money, food, health, etc.)
Tips on Being an Out-of-State Student:
  1. Meet people
  2. Make friends who live in the area or have family who live in the area
  3. Get to know the area and explore your new surroundings
  4. Visit home when you can
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it
