- I Don’t Even Know You Anymore (ft. Bazzi and Lil Wayne): Netsky
Netsky is an EDM artist from Belgium signed under Sony. His type of music is described as “liquid funk,” characterized by heavy bass lines, and tons of layers. This song, featuring up and comer Bazzi and the iconic Lil Wayne, was released on Valentine’s Day, giving the pop breakup track a new iconic feel.
- Dumb Blonde feat. Nicki Minaj: Avril Lavigne
A few years ago, there was a conspiracy theory that circulated around the internet saying that Avril Lavigne was dead and replaced by a body double named Melissa. After all, “Melissa was different than the Avril we thought we knew. Avril wears pants; Melissa tended to wear more dresses… Avril was punky; Melissa married that guy from Nickelback. The one distinct thing about Avril Lavigne though is her voice, and with the release of this song, she has proved that she is indeed, not dead. This song also features Nicki Minaj, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Rap,” and I don’t think I can disagree with that.
- Find My Love: Salaam Remi, Nas, Amy Winehouse
This track engineered by Salaam Remi is unique in itself that it features both Nas and unreleased vocals from the late Amy Winehouse; this is interesting and important because this is the first posthumous release from Winehouse since 2015. Her soulful voice serves as the backdrop for Nas to rap about a steamy date.
- Big Plans: Why Don’t We
Boy bands will never go out of style, so pop group Why Don’t We is right on trend. Nominated for ‘Best Push’ as part of the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2018, they have been making music as a group since 2016. Big Plans dropped in January and tells the story of a guy who has ‘big plans’ for his relationship with his desired lover.
- Body: Loud Luxury, Brando
Loud Luxury is a Canadian pop duo, and the song features Brando. Released in 2017, this song reached the Top Five in Canada, Denmark, and the UK, but didn’t receive too much pull in the US, only ranking #80 on the US Top 100. Still, though, it’s definitely worth a listen.
- Space Cadet (feat Gunna): Metro Boomin, Gunna
Metro Boomin is one of the most notable hip-hop producers in the current time, and with artists like Drake, Future, and 21 Savage backing his talent, it’s easy to see why in 2017 Forbes noted him to be “”easily one of the most in-demand hitmakers in the world.” Space Cadet (featuring the rapper Gunna) is off his album “Not All Heroes Wear Capes,” and was recently performed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, featuring a live orchestra.
- Bury a friend: Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish is a unique artist in that she (similar to artist Lorde in her early days) makes weird pop. Her vocals are haunting, and she uses heavy beats and instrumental backgrounds to give her songs an eerie feel, and ‘bury a friend’ is no exception. Her first album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’ releases on March 29 of this year, and as of February 16, Billboard reported ‘bury a friend’ to have the highest alternative digital sales.
- Cuz I Love You: Lizzo
Cuz I Love You is hip hop artist Lizzo’s first song produced by a major label (Atlantic), and this song is heavy. On it, Lizzo shows her extensive vocal range and talent, with R&B vibes and a band full of brass instruments to give it a more soulful vibe. Her album ‘Cuz I Love You’ will be released in April of this year.
- I Heart You: Baby Ariel
Baby Ariel first gained popularity in 2016, with the videos she made on the app Music.ly, and she also won the Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Muser.’This song is very pop, but it is also enjoyable.
- Dirty Water: Yoshi Flower
Yoshi Flower is an American artist who uses various influences to make his music. Dirty Water, therefore, features acoustic guitar and SoundCloud-esque hip hop vocals on the melody to construct the meat of the song. Simultaneously intricate and straightforward in its artistry, the song was released on February 15 of this year.
