Men’s volleyball is on the way to William Peace university during the 2026-2027 academic year, according to Director of Athletic Communications Carly Vandinsky.
Peace has come a long way since it was established in 1857 as an all women’s college, became co-ed in 2011, up to now where many of the university’s population consists of both male and female athletes.
“It was a group decision-making process and with the rising popularity of men’s volleyball it would help expand athletic opportunities at WPU,” said Claude Shields, WPU athletic director.
Additionally, Tim Byram has been introduced into being the men’s volleyball coach for the 2026-2027 Season.
He comes in with 27 years of coaching experience and has had success at Endicott College where he had a record of 535-342, coaching the women’s program. He had 10 NCAA Division III appearances and nine conference championships. He also coaches the men’s team and is the winningest coach in school history.
“His experience and history in building successful men’s and women’s programs are huge as we need someone who is confident in what he does and is not afraid to make mistakes,” said Shields. “His leadership will be important in shaping a new program.”
Shields emphasized the athletic department’s vision for the future.
“We first want to establish the program and culture as it is hard to build a program from the ground up,” said Shields. “We also want to lay a foundation for competition and be competitive while also looking for conference affiliation.”
This new sport will bring a new community and excitement to a growing campus and help expand the culture of winning and teamwork that WPU stands on.
“I am excited to see a new sport at our school and the atmosphere it can create with other athletes and sports to help them join into our community,” said senior basketball player Shawn Jones.
