On Friday April 11th, William Peace University’s (WPU) Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) and Peace and the Community Together (PACT) will work with Stop Hunger Now (SHN) Stop Hunger Now, which is a meal packaging program that originated in 2005. SHN is an international hunger relief agency that a simple vision and mission: to live in a world without hunger.
The SHN crew comes to the volunteers and form an assembly line to work together to package rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. One event can provide more than 1,000,000 meals to those who are victims of natural disasters, school feeding programs, vocational training programs, early childhood development programs, orphanages, and medical clinics.
Each packaged meal costs only 29 cents making this an affordable and a quality filled program. In addition, having volunteers participate is a cost efficient way of assembling everything together and partners of SHN aid in distribution. The life line of each package is two years and can be conveniently stored due to their small packaging.
Senior, Kailie Batsche is ODK’s Service Chair. Her committee and the PACT committee are working rigorously to make a difference in the world and motivate the Peace community to get involved.
“Hunger is a global issue and SHN is an organization dedicated to creating hunger awareness in our country. By spending one hour of your time you’re helping entire families get the food they need. One can never truly know someone else’s hardships, but we can all do what we can to help- even if it is just a little bit,” shares Batsche.
WPU will be packaging 10,000 meals in two hours. There will be shifts that volunteers can sign up for. The first shift will take place from 4-5pm and the second shift will be from 5-6pm.
